February 2018 – Parent Update

Agenda and Meeting Minutes from Parent & Troop Committee Meeting held on February 6, 2018

  • Committee Positions — Mr. Daniel Brunello explained the duties related to each of the following vacant positions and requested parents to help by volunteering for the positions.
    • Committee Chair – Daniel

    • Activity Consent Form – Each scout needs to sign this form for every activity organized by the Troop. Parents are requested not to leave (when dropping off their scout to the activity) without confirming that for that day’s activity the leaders have everything for the scout.
    • Finance

      • Electronic Payment System – Decision to be made after talking to the Church.
      • Garage Sale – April 7
        • Mr. Noel Aranzamendez informed the parents that there will be flyers posted on website and they will be send out thought the scouts. He explained the process. Timing will be tentatively 7 am to 2:30 pm. The Friday before is when everyone drops off their stuff at the church. Leaders will be available to pick up larger items from 7 pm to 9 pm Friday. Postings will be made on Facebook, the Troop website, Nextdoor, FB Marketplace. It is a good fundraising opportunity through donations. The Troop will need a few Eezee Ups, Coat hangers, Plastic bags. The Troop also plans to sell donuts and coffee for 50 cents each.
      • Scout Fair Coupon Sales – Ms. Christy Hill is in charge. Scout Fair is on April 14. Cost is $10/book. Revenues (30%) goes to the scout account. This raises funds for the district.
      • Pancake Breakfast – May 12 – Mother’s Day weekend. Ms. Supradipta Datta will be in charge of this fundraiser. The Troop plans to sell carnations at the event.
        • Sell Tickets in front of Applebee’s – Boys sell tickets.
        • It was decided to find out about other possible institutes since last year Applebee’s was not very efficient.
      • Scholarship awareness – Scholarships are offered for NYLT and Camping. The Scholarship committee is made up of Celeste, Noel, Dipta, Mary and Gulnar. To be eligible, the scout has to be at least 1st class and should have the Scout master’s permission. Some funds may be available for Camp Outs as well. An email is to be send out regarding the details.
    • Service

      • Scouting for Food – Was held in two parts on January 27 and February 3. Mr. Andy Friedman reported that 2,044 items of food was collected and donated. Everything was dropped off food during the Super Bowl. There was a good turn out during Part II but not Part I. It was decided to get commitments from scouts early on next year.
      • Next Service Projects – Andy Friedman announced it to be at the National Cemetery on Memorial Day.
      • Troop 731 can have scouts from our Troop camping with them. An email went out about Camp Mauritz.
      • Possibility of more service projects are ones that are organized by Missouri city Green, Keep Sugar Land Beautiful, etc. The Church (Mr. Don) is going to contact us with other projects like painting the speed bumps in front of the church (it was decided to use brushes or rollers this time) in March/April, help with the garden, etc. Mr. Andy Friedman will ask if the Church needs help with chairs put up and take down for Easter.
    • Program Calendar
      • On February 11, Scout Sunday, there was a fantastic sermon with PPT presentation with stories about merit badges from 1911 at the Church. 6 scouts and 6 adults showed up.
      • Climbing Merit Badge – February 18 (Sunday @ 8am to noon) – right now 12 boys are signed up. The Troop is conducting a one day activity as Presidents’ Day holiday was cancelled by school districts. The scouts will arrive back around tentatively 2 pm, at YMCA (because it is a Sunday).
      • Mr. Malte Funk-Sheppard thanked Mr. Daniel Brunello for his recruiting efforts. In the next 2 weeks another 6 to 7 new scouts might be joining or transferring to our troop.
      • PLC – February 20
      • February 17-19 – Campout – Climbing in Hill Country was cancelled
      • March 2-4 – Camporee Camp Out will focus on Pioneering. It is also important as it emphasizes community building with scouts. The Thunderwolf Website has more details about the day (cook off, etc.)
      • COMMITTEE / PARENTS MEETING – March 6 – FIRST TUESDAY OF EVERY MONTH
      • March 24-25 – Campout – Horseback Riding near Huntsville SP
      • Vineet is the webmaster. It was suggested that the website needs updating.
      • University of Scouting is coming up on March 24th at the Mickey Leeland College. It is helpful for parents looking to help the Troop.
    • Advancement Updates
      • FCE (First Class Emphasis) – Mr. Noel Aranmendez informed that the weekend of Feb 24-25 he will be at the Sugar Land Veteran’s Memorial. An announcement with more details is coming about FCE, which is Orienteering.
      • Scoutbook – Mr. Ismael Carlo informed parents that once they sign in and go to their scout’s account, they can invite the scout to join. Mr. Ismael Carlo can send the details of account set up if anyone needs them. Mr. David Rudzinski proposed to have a clinic to get everyone acquainted with the website.
      • YMCA in Richmond has a swimming (Feb 10) and in March Life Saving MB course.
      • The Troop has to set the Swim test date for the scouts. Dr. Graviss needs to be contacted to get in touch with Evette. Mr. Ismael Carlo volunteered to coordinate with Dr. Graviss

  • Summer Camp Updates

    • July 1 – 7, 2018 – Bear Creek Scout Reservation
      • $385 pp by Jan 30, then $400 pp
      • Deadline extended for new scouts
  • High Adventure
    • Northern Tier 6/9/2018 – 6/17/2018 – Right now 6 scouts and adults are signed up. However, 2 more can join as 8 is the maximum number of participant allowed.
    • Sea Base 2018 – 6/7/18 to 6/14/18
    • PHILMONT 2019 – We got it!! Mr. David Rudzinski is in charge of sending the Commitment Letter. Minimum eligible age 14 as of June 17, 2019. Camp dates are from June 18 to June 30, 2019. Departure will be on June 17 (Monday), the scouts will stay over in Albuquerque, NM and reach Philmont on June 18. There will be extensive training before going. This camp out involves carrying a lot of weight while hiking in high altitude (thin air). Total cost will be approximately $2,100. Payment will start with $140/month.
    • SEA BASE 2019 – The Troop is in the lottery for this one but has not got confirmation. Minimum eligible age is 13 years. The Camp Out is in the Florida Keys and has ocean based (snorkeling, etc.) activities. Participants must be strong swimmers.
